LIFE

LVGVVALIVM

That memory. Mist. Letters cut in stone. House, warm. Hay loft. Hair short– bone knife. Warm smell, horse. Hands. Smiling, welcome. Happy late. Pater smiles:

Nemea.

Boys run, play. Mud. Anger and knowledge. Hate self. House, wooden floor. Sweeping, chickens. Mists. Stone wall, road to forever. Cold winters. Knowledge of purpose, decision. Minerva. Love of old Rome, strength. Pater smiles. I choose:

Julius.

Red and armor. Deeper voice. Cold mists, shivering anger. Shorter– doesn’t matter. They don’t know the truth. I fight like the rest. Pin, grapple, mud. Elite. Unforgiving frontier. Too few of us. Desperation. Keep pushing. Leader silver hair, blood on my lip. Snarl. What it means to be a soldier, a man. Pater jokes:

Julia.

She is Beautiful. Hair midnight. Secret welcomed. Sweet, short. Tent. Moonlight. Cold, so short, so short. Sudden. Rushing shapes, horde, black. black on black in trees. Quick. Violation. Pinned, I watch- - am. Cruel tears. See my truth. Carried back. Lover corpse. Reaching. Empty. Shaman, darkness. Long darkness. Child. Grows. Growing. Sudden air, free. Run! Run! Breathe! Cliff. Fall to the bottom. No pater. No pater. Broken. Carried back. Damaged. Ejected. Shaman smiles:

Walkure.

Dull dawn. Mists. Old ways. Shaman’s hut. Mystery of woman who walks as a man. Lessons, lessons. Impart. Become. I see the darkness, don’t resist. Become. I become. Change. Walk like the wolf. Feel it. Power. Life and death. Reverence worn like armor, coat. Rising, rising. Shaman hands, shaking, shaking. Rattle, flaring light. Dedication. I smile:

Frigga.

Nemea was born in a Romano/Briton village on the frontier of a collapsing empire. She died as a spiritual leader and devotee to the barbarian goddess Frigga.

Better Than Real

As some of my readers know, there's nothing that I get more excited about than science fiction, but when that science fiction is so near future that it falls into that quasi-subgenre of cyberpunk which holds works like Richard K. Morgan's Altered Carbon series or my own Pink Carbide series, I really start to get excited. In the case of this book, not only is it an awesome contribution to the post-cyberpunk literary world, but it is also very well written and very intelligent.

And the best part-- it's a print on demand book. It's a part of the future. It's proof that a book can be both excellent beyond belief and be published on such a small scale that practically nobody knows about it. Seriously, this book rocks. Five stars and then some.

Quick synopsis: A young bot designer named Lee is caught in a high-stakes, deadly pursuit when he stumbles across an advanced combat A.I. named Lilith in the body of one of his designs - - after it has murdered someone. But who is the real enemy here? The combat A.I., or the people desperately trying to kill it, Lee, and anyone else in between? It's a thrillride you wont be able to put down and wont be able to forget.

A Daughter's Hope

A friend of mine recently got in contact with me about an exciting new project that his film company is working on producing. It's a touching and wonderful story-- read on, and consider supporting this most worthy cause.

"A Daughter's Hope" is the fictional telling of the true life events of Michigan resident Christine Hill as she struggles to overcome an extraordinarily difficult and abusive life, the most painful part of which was the unexplained disappearance of her mother from the Florida Keys in 1981. While the case is still unresolved, this particular story focuses on Ms. Hill as she fights with setback after setback, only to become a stronger wife and mother to her own family. Ms. Hill is also the co-writer of the script.

To see how you can be a part of this poignant film that addresses the important issues of domestic abuse and missing loved ones, please visit http://www.brandellafilms.com/daughtersHope.html, and know that with your generous support, you are helping Ms. Hill and the thousands of other victims and witnesses of domestic abuse and missing loved ones find the road to closure. Any amount would be graciously and humbly accepted, so stop in and show your support today! After all, if you were in this position, would you ever give up hope?

25 Random Things

After seeing a blog post on Octopus’ Garden where the author outlined twenty-five random things about himself, I decided to give it a try myself. Here’s 25 random things about me.

1. When people ask me how I’m doing, my response is almost entirely determined by where I’m at with my writing. (“How have you been?” “Oh, alright. I wrote three pages yesterday!”)

2. One of my great passions is game design, but I’ve never really pursued marketing any of my games/ideas. . . yet.

3. I believe that there are eight billion (or so) different ways to view the world, and that they’re all equally valid.

4. I love my car, The Blue Valkyrie. I painted her myself, and my mother did the hood. :)

5. My father made me memorize a series of five rules when I was a little kid that he would regularly test me on. The only one I still remember is the first: Shoot straight and speak the truth.

6. My absolute favorite food of all time is Stollen. It’s a form of fruitcake. I love it so much that when I discovered it, I was ready to propose to the cook.

7. Normal jobs bore me. I have to do bizarre things, like sell swords or teach creative writing.

8. All of my lucky numbers by chance happen to add up to or be divisible by 8. Therefore, 8 is my luckiest number.

9. I believe that James Cameron and Carl Sagan are the two most amazing human beings ever to live. James Cameron earns this because of Aliens, Terminator 2 and Avatar. Carl Sagan earns this by achieving a sort of scientific zen by means of pure genius. Watch Cosmos, you’ll see what I mean.

10. Thomas Dolby is my #1 favorite musician. His music is poetry in motion. :)

11. The only bone I’ve ever really broken was my left arm. Twice.

12. When I originally sat down to write Pink Carbide, I planned to make it into a series of shorter episodes, like Cygnus War (only this was before Cygnus War) and only later changed my mind and made it into a book instead. That’s why the first handful of chapters are all close to the same length, while later chapter lengths are all over the place.

13. I spent eight months flying airplanes at the world’s first flight school. Unfortunately, they fell on hard times, and all I got out of it were some memories and some debt.

14. My greatest weaknesses are:
  1. Women with short hair (especially spiky!)
  2. Glasses/dark eyes
  3. Intelligence
  4. Musical talent
15. I believe that artists of any kind are undervalued. I find it hard sometimes to contrast this with my belief that art should be free. (Free art leads to starvation and insecurity, which in turn leads to crappy art. Support your local artist!)

16. Storm Constantine and S.L. Viehl are the only authors who I would follow to the end and back. Stardoc and Wraeththu, baby! Yeah!

17. My favorite piece of writing that I’ve ever done is the unfinished novel on my wall that I can look up at and touch whenever I get into bed.

18. Originally, when I was much younger, I considered going into film, set design, music and drawing type fine arts in order to bring my stories to the world, but I ultimately settled on writing because it gives the most bang for the buck.

19. People have tried to give me nicknames here and there since I was a little kid, but the only one that has ever really stuck was “Big Brother.”

20. I feel that corporations, like anything else, have their benefits and their pitfalls. Benefits include people working together toward a common goal. Pitfalls include corruption, destruction, and a wide-scale skewing of world view in a way that damages those who don’t fit in.

21. My earliest memory is of seeing a strange red, ghostly light that spoke to me and told me things that I don’t remember, but which I feel had some spiritual significance. (I was really really small) My second earliest memory is of finding a dead kitten and asking my father what happens when we die. His response: “It’s like sleep, only you don’t dream. You never dream, and you never wake up.” From the very foundation, my beliefs when it comes to spirit, energy and the afterlife have been thus divided, and it sucks sometimes.

22. My favorite video game of all time is Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri. It’s the only game I still play it at least twice a year.

23. I still have the first poem I ever wrote. . . somewhere around here.

24. I do what I like, therefore I am consistently weird. I find normalcy and “reality” to be painfully boring and pointless.

25. I live in khaki shorts and hawaiian shirts. Only on really cold days when I’m outside or in drafty areas a lot will you ever see me dressed in anything else, and then, its slacks and a leather jacket. (With the Hawaiian shirt)

Achieve Confidence!

The Conscious I

If the purpose of government is ultimately to keep people happy by imposing order in ways that provide the maximal amount of pleasure to a given populace, especially in the case of what would be seen as "the perfect government", then wouldn't the easiest to govern populace be, say, a theoretical group of people wired up so that they were shut off entirely from the world and fed only maximal pleasure stimulai, thereby making them as happy as they could be all the time? Could you then, theoretically, create any sort of system around that to maintain order, because the people would always be ecstatically content?

What I mean to say is, if you had a workforce whose minds could be separated from their bodies and "backed up" in a sense, making each individual immortal, their minds sustained while pleasure centers were endlessly stimulated to the maximum and bodies continued to work in the background, totally unobserved regardless of what tasks they were performing, would you not then have a perfect populace, thereby allowing for a perfect government?

Would there be a loss of self if the quest for betterment were suddenly utterly fulfilled? What would happen to the things that provide character, idiosyncracies, the unique characteristics that define the self, the soul, as it were? Is our entire existence as conscious beings due to and defined by the painful experiences we endure between triggerings of our pleasure centers? Would we even have a self if it wasn't for pain? Or would we simply be a blank slate experiencing never-ending joy-stimulation? Would that even be a life? How would such a being define itself? Would it even be sentient or conscious? Or perhaps a more basic question - - if the mind is detatched from the body, where does the self go? In the case of what may become our future - - digital backup of the mind as an attempt to beat out death, what will happen to the "I" that is the conscious self within all of us? Will it be transferred with the mind to the software? Will the software then be conscious with the self that I know and feel as I, or will it die with the body? I know that I am only capable of maintaining a single consciousness - this body's consciousness, the self that is I, but which body would the self that is I inhabit if my mind were backed up on a computer and my body were euthanized?

Or consider mind-linkup, group consciousness. If the mind were linked to a network of minds and this network became its own mind, its own individual, singular consciousness, who would be the self? Who would be the conscious I behind that group individual? Can one exist as part of a group individual such as that without losing his or her more singular individuality?

If I design an artificial intelligence, then upload the minds of an entire world into it to create a group consciousness, an individual mind whose body is composed of billions of bodies, then euthanize those bodies, leaving only the digital group individual, what becomes of the one individual self that is I among that sea of minds merged into the group organism? Who or what consciously sees that group mind as I? Do all the minds simply act and feel in concert as a single mind and feel (individually and yet wholly) that they are the conscious I? Would my "self" then be me and everyone else, thereby making me individually and singly every other person uploaded into the mix?

How does this work with a notion of a soul? If the bioelectric energy within our minds is the self, the spirit, the soul, as it were, and energy is neither created or destroyed, only changed, then simply recording the information locked in the brain which defines the self into a digital format wouldn't actually record the true self, the conscious I, would it? Would a special means therefore be necessary to "back up" the soul on corporeal recordable media? A means which "downloads" and incorporates the bioelectric energy of the body without letting any of it go or escape? Or would there simply be multiple selfs, a copy of the I within each body my consciousness is copied into that is a fully cognizant self? If so, then which one is the me that is I? If that me that is I dies, do I die? What about the I that is consciously me in my clones?

Awesome Audio

Once in a while, you come across something so cool you can't help but blabber about it to practically everyone you know-- and then some. Continuing in that tradition, here are two sites that I ran across online that definitely deserve some attention!

The first is "The Symphony of Science", the site behind "A More Glorious Dawn". Continuing in the vein of science made musical, this site has continued to impress with three new releases, all awesomely composed and organized. And the best part? Every last one of them has a music video attached to it. It doesn't get any cooler than this.

A composer who does video game and anime music for charity? Can I get a "Hello God!" ? Not only does this guy create sheet music from this stuff that you can play, he does it all. . . everything, for charity! Not to mention he's a pro at the piano. At the very least, stop on by this guy's site and check out the music he plays. Better than that, pick up a copy of his album!

A Thought

Someone once told me that choosing any art as a career would be hard, but what I think that person failed to realize is that, for a writer, there is no easier path than the one that they are on. Life is hard. Why make it harder by setting your life on a course that is anything other than what you love?

Young Adults Writing (creatively!)

What you need:
Several short myths from different cultures (Preferably Greek, Roman and Norse, as per California Language Arts standards, but you can expand upon that)

The Activity:
Have your students read aloud a series of myths from different cultures, then discuss some of the hallmarks that make these myths unique. Ask the question: how might you identify which culture a particular myth came from? What makes it stereotypical of that culture?

Once you’ve hashed out the identifying factors, have your students write their own myths using certain hallmarks– and then have the other students try to identify which culture it might have fit with. Explain the similarities between this and writing within a genre. Discuss hallmarks within genres (space ships and science fiction, magic and fantasy, etc.)

Pink Carbide: Snazzy MP3s

Pink Carbide in Audio!

From the back cover of the book:
"In the dark underworld of Los Angeles, 2162, Cylea is targeted by unknown forces within the shadowy depths of global corporate government. Safety is scarce and running is the rule, but each brush with death builds new layers of strength within her, yielding new clues and new mysteries as she fights to uncover a deep-rooted secret unlike any other in the history of the human race, centered around the last person she'd ever expect it to be. Herself."

This is the first installment of the powerful epic written and read by internationally acclaimed author E.S. Wynn. Critics have described his work as "incredible", "astounding" and even "godly." Don't miss this amazing seven disc, forty-one chapter audiobook which lays out the future as it could be, and follows the one woman who will ultimately change that future. . . forever.
